Started in 1979 by a Tufts University dean, Tufts health plan has grown to become one of the most respected health plans in the country. Their HMO was voted best HMO for women by American Health Magazine, and the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) gave them an accreditation of "Excellent" in 2001. They serve the Massachusetts area with a variety of health care products.
Tufts has a range of products for ensuring the health of you and your family. They offer HMO (health management organization), PPO (preferred provider organization) and POS (point-of-service) plans for their customers. Here are some details of plans available from Tufts for individuals and families:
* HMO Plan - In this plan, customers are paired with a primary care physician who oversees their care and refers them to specialists when necessary. Benefits include regular physician visits, emergency and hospitalization services, specialist care, inpatient and outpatient services and prescription drug coverage.
* PPO Plan - In this plan, you are free to see any doctor they like, but benefits are higher and out-of-pocket cost is lower when you visit physicians from within Tufts' provider network. Benefits include regular physician visits, emergency and hospitalization services, specialist care, inpatient and outpatient services and prescription drug coverage.
* POS Plan - Tufts was the first health provider in its area to offer this innovative type of plan. Point of Service plans allow you to select the type of coverage you want as you seek care. All three service options, primary care physician, preferred provider or out of network provider are covered at differing rates, and it is up to you to decide which option you want for a given service. Out-of-pocket costs tend to be lower when you select either a primary care physician or a PPO member for service, but you are still covered wherever you go. Benefits are comparable to either the HMO or PPO plan.
