Oregon has countered the rising cost of living and the rising need for dependable family health insurance with a one-two punch. Not only does the state have a host of insurance carriers who offer affordable family healthcare plans to its residents, but it also has many state regulations set up to protect the rights of both the well and the sick. In fact, the state of Oregon has some of the most patient-friendly insurance regulations around. Reliable family health insurance does not have to be a pipe dream; in Oregon, research and planning can lead to the protection of your family’s health.
Family Health Insurance Regulations in Oregon (OR):
Oregon is one of a few states that mandates that its insurance companies charge the same premium to all members of the same plan - individual or group - regardless of each member's actuarial risk profile.
Oregon also caps the maximum exclusion period for both small group and individual plans. For group plans, this period is 6 months - or 12 months for late plan enrollees. Insurance companies are allowed a "look-back" period of 6 months.
Self-employed Oregon residents are not eligible to purchase group health plans, as small businesses are.
Individual health plan companies have the right to deny coverage for medical conditions, but Oregon offers insurance for those rejected through the Oregon Medical Insurance Pool (OMIP). This pool has no annual benefit cap, a lifetime cap of $1,000,000, no enrollment cap, and a waiting period of 6 months for pre-existing condition coverage.
Genetic information is not considered pre-existing, but pregnancy can be.
Once you obtain insurance, your policy cannot be cancelled upon an illness that arises.
