  • Under individual plans, insurance companies may question pre-existing status by examining medical records up to 3-month prior to an individual’s application, where pregnancy may be considered a pre-existing condition.

  • The state has a limit of 9 months for exclusion periods under both individual and group plans. However, for group plans, the look-back period for medical records is 9 months - slightly longer than that for individual plans.

  • In New Hampshire, both self-employed individuals and small business owners are able to purchase group health plans if they choose to.

  • For New Hamphire residents who are denied insurance due to pre-existing conditions, the state offers a subsidized high-risk insurance pool - the New Hampshire Health Plan - that has no limits on annual or lifetime benefits, no enrollment cap, and no exclusion period for pre-existing conditions.

  • New Hampshire is one of only a few states that applies community rating to both individual and group health plans. This means that the state requires insurers to charge everyone the same premium rate. The premium cannot vary depending upon the actuarial risk presented by an individual or group.
