Family Health Insurance Regulations and Programs in Missouri (MO) :

  • Missouri small business owners are eligible for group health plans but watch for variations in premium costs in regards to the number of employees. Self-employed residents, however, are not eligible for group plans.

  • If your family is covered under a group health plan, the state of Missouri limits exclusion of coverage for pre-existing conditions to 12 months prior to the start of effective coverage of your plan. Insurance companies can look at medical records up to 6 months prior. (The maximum exclusion time can be up to 18 months for late enrollees.)

  • Unless individuals meet the guidelines for Health Insurance Portability and Affordability Act (HIPAA), insurance companies may deny coverage for individual plans. Furthermore, for individual plans there are no limits to exclusion of coverage.

  • Missouri considers pregnancy a pre-existing condition but does offer alternative governmental options for pregnant women and mothers through the Department of Social Services.

  • The Missouri Health Insurance Pool (MHIP) offers affordable coverage for individuals previously denied coverage because of pre-existing medical conditions and those who want to purchase coverage but are unable to find a policy at a reasonable cost. Although the pool has no annual benefit cap, it does have a lifetime benefit maximum of $1,000,000 for all medical benefits except for treatment of alcoholism, drug abuse and chemical dependency, which actually have a lower cap of $25,000. There is no enrollment cap, but there is a waiting period of 12 months before coverage can begin for pre-existing conditions.
