Kaiser Permanente was begun in the Mojave desert when the doctor Sidney R. Garfield watched the building of the Los Angeles Aqueduct and decided to build a hospital for injured workers. Many o f the workers couldn't pay, and the hospital would have collapsed in debt, had a Mr. Harold Hatch not introduced the doctor to a new kind of insurance; that of the pre-paid plan. Nearly a century later, pre-paid health care is one of the largest businesses in the world, with Kaiser Permanente leading the way as the largest HMO in the United States.
Kaiser Permanente of Oregon/Washington was established in 1955 to cover residents of the Pacific Northwest, including Oregon and Washington. After adding this segment of the Kaiser family, enrollment grew to cover nearly half a million people. Kaiser offers families considering health insurance plenty of options.
