Alliance for Affordable Services is a
non-profit advocacy and consumer association who work
to lower the cost of health insurance to its customers.
Alliance for Affordable Services does not provide health
insurance, but instead secures services at a lower cost
through Mid-West National Life Insurance. Started in
1981 primarily as a way to serve small entrepreneurs,
the Alliance grew to over 150,000 members. In addition
to its member services, the Alliance has acted as an
advocate in major legislative decisions affecting health
care.
The target customer of the Alliance is
the small-business owner or employee and the self-employed
individual and their respective families, who make up
60% of uninsured Americans. The Alliance has used its
collective power to put contractual limits on the marketing
and administrative budgets of its carrier. In addition,
they require the carrier to provide a representatives
to explain benefits to members face-to-face. The plan
offered to members includes freedom of choice of doctors
and hospitals and customized coverage to fit individual
members needs.
